10 Tips for Confidence and Authenticity On-Camera

Being authentic on-camera is the most important thing you can do to be relatable to connect audience, which will make you memorable.

Sometimes, it's just natural, but most of the time you have to work at it.

After more than 15 years on-camera, I've learned how to be myself and feel confident about it. But if you're just starting out, I have a list of 10 things you can start doing now, to help you become authentic, comfortable and ultimately confident.

Here are some tips for projecting confidence and authenticity on-camera:

  1. Know your material: Before you go on-camera, make sure you know your material inside and out. Practice your talking points and be prepared to speak extemporaneously if necessary.

  2. Make eye contact: When you look into the camera, you are making eye contact with your audience. This helps to establish a connection and builds trust.

  3. Speak with conviction: Speak clearly and with conviction, emphasizing key points and using intonation to convey emotion.

  4. Use body language: Your body language can convey confidence and authenticity. Sit up straight, use hand gestures, and avoid fidgeting.

  5. Dress appropriately: Wear clothing that is appropriate for the occasion and makes you feel confident. Dressing for the part can help you feel more confident and prepared.

  6. Be yourself: Authenticity is key to projecting confidence on-camera. Be yourself, don't try to be someone you're not.

  7. Practice, practice, practice: The more you practice, the more comfortable and confident you'll feel on-camera. Consider recording yourself and watching the footage to identify areas for improvement.

  8. Use positive self-talk: Before you go on-camera, remind yourself of your strengths and positive attributes. Focus on what you do well, rather than on your weaknesses.

  9. Visualize success: Visualize yourself performing well on-camera. This can help you build confidence and reduce anxiety.

  10. Be present: Finally, be present in the moment. Focus on the task at hand and stay in the present moment. Don't get distracted by thoughts of the past or future.
